A Brush with Silence is a performance piece in which calligraphers from different traditions and cultures – Chinese, Arabic, Hebrew, Greek, Graffiti, Hindu, Japanese, Western, Farsi, etc. – write their traditional and modern scripts in an atmosphere of silent contemplation.  The public is invited to meander through the darkened space and observe, but not disturb, the calligraphers at their silent work.  Their finished pages are then brought together to make a large multi-lingual and multi-graphic volume.

TOWERS

Sint Rombouts Tower, Mechelen Cathedral
Market Square
Mechelen
Belgium

From 31 March 2009, Brody Neuenschwander and Jeroen D’hoe will install a sound and light project on the roof and in the tower of the Cathedral of Mechelen.  For a period of three months, the roof of the cathedral will be transformed into a moving poem by means of laser-projected text.  The text is an extended meditation on the meaning of towers.

Composer Jeroen D’hoe will alter the chamber at the top of the cathedral tower, called the Askelder, with a permanent soundscape installation on the same theme.  A screen installed in the oculus of the chamber will bring fragments of the roof text to the inside of the building.
